Audio Converter

Convert audio between MP3, M4A (AAC), OGG (Opus) and WAV — from MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, Opus and FLAC — one file or many, in your browser.

Convert audio files to the format you need: WAV recordings to MP3 to save space, M4A voice memos from an iPhone to MP3 for Windows or Android, FLAC music to MP3 or AAC for your phone, MP3 to WAV for an editing program, or anything to OGG Opus for the smallest files. The Audio Converter reads MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus and FLAC files — and the sound of MP4, MOV and WebM videos — and writes MP3, M4A (AAC), OGG (Opus) or WAV.

Drop one file or up to 50 at once, choose the format and quality, and download the converted files together. The sample rate and stereo or mono are kept where the format allows. Conversion happens in your browser, so your files are never uploaded.

How to use Audio Converter

  1. Choose or drop one or more audio files.
  2. Choose the output format: MP3, M4A (AAC), OGG (Opus) or WAV.
  3. Choose the quality (bitrate) for compressed formats.
  4. Press Convert and download your files.

Which format should I choose?

Lossless formats keep every detail; lossy formats are much smaller and, at good bitrates, sound the same to most listeners.

Lossy to lossy

Converting a lossy file (MP3, AAC, Opus) to another lossy format decodes it and compresses it again, which loses a little more detail each time. Choose a bitrate at least as high as the original — 192 kbps or more for music — and the difference stays inaudible. Converting a lossy file to WAV doesn't bring lost detail back; it only makes the file larger and easier to edit. Converting from WAV or FLAC gives the best results, because they hold the full original sound.

Sample rates and channels

Most music is recorded at 44.1 kHz and most video sound at 48 kHz. The converter keeps the original sample rate for MP3 and WAV. AAC is written at 44.1 or 48 kHz as AAC encoders require, and Opus always works at 48 kHz internally, so other rates are converted automatically. Stereo stays stereo and mono stays mono; surround sound is mixed down to stereo.

Common conversions

WAV to MP3 is the classic way to make recordings from a recorder or editing program small enough to share: 192 kbps keeps music sounding the same and cuts the size by about 85 percent. M4A to MP3 makes iPhone voice memos and iTunes purchases play on Windows, Android and car stereos. FLAC to MP3 or AAC puts lossless music on a phone; use 256 or 320 kbps. MP3 to WAV is needed by some editing, DJ and telephony software. OGG to MP3 turns WhatsApp and game audio into a format every player understands.

Private conversion

The files are decoded by your browser's built-in media engine and encoded on your device — MP3 with the open-source LAME encoder, AAC and Opus with the browser's own encoders — so nothing is uploaded and there are no limits on the number of conversions. Each file is checked by its content: a picture or document renamed to .mp3 is refused with a clear message, and files without sound are pointed out.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert WAV to MP3?

Open the WAV file, choose MP3 and a quality (192 kbps is a good default) and press Convert.

How do I convert M4A to MP3?

Open the M4A file, choose MP3 and press Convert. iPhone voice memos are M4A files.

Can I convert FLAC to MP3?

Yes. Choose MP3 at 256 or 320 kbps to keep the quality close to the FLAC.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes, up to 50 files in one go; they are all converted to the same format.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser.

Why is WAV so large?

WAV is uncompressed: about 10 MB per minute of stereo at 44.1 kHz.

Can I save as FLAC?

Not yet: FLAC files can be opened but not written. Choose WAV for a lossless result.
