Remove Line Breaks
Remove line breaks from text copied from PDFs and emails: keep paragraphs or join everything, re-join hyphenated words, or replace breaks with commas.
Text copied from a PDF, an email, a scanned document or a website often arrives with a line break at the end of every line, so it looks broken when you paste it into a document, a form or a chat. Remove Line Breaks joins those lines back into flowing sentences while keeping your paragraphs — the empty lines between them — exactly where they were.
Words that were split with a hyphen at the end of a line (“exam-” / “ple”) are joined again, while real hyphenated words such as well-known keep their hyphen. Double spaces are tidied. You can also remove every line break to get one single line, or replace line breaks with a comma, a space or any separator you like to turn a list into one line. The result appears as you type and can be copied or downloaded.
How to use Remove Line Breaks
- Paste your text into the left box.
- Choose Keep paragraphs, Remove all, or Replace with… and a separator.
- Leave re-joining of hyphenated words on, unless your text needs the hyphens.
- Copy or download the cleaned text.
Features
- Keeps paragraphs while joining wrapped lines.
- Removes all line breaks for one continuous line.
- Replaces line breaks with commas or any separator.
- Re-joins words hyphenated at the end of a line; keeps real compound hyphens.
- Removes soft hyphens and collapses double spaces.
- Counts the line breaks removed; works live in your browser.
Examples
A paragraph copied from a PDF such as “The results show that the new / method is faster” (with a break after “new”) becomes one smooth line. A shopping list of five lines becomes “milk, bread, eggs, apples, rice” with Replace with… and a comma. A wrapped plain-text email becomes normal paragraphs that re-flow in your reply. And a block of lines from a spreadsheet column can be turned into a single line separated by semicolons for pasting into a form or search box.
The three modes
Choose the mode that matches what you want the text to become.
| Mode | What happens | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Keep paragraphs | Lines inside a paragraph are joined; empty lines stay | Text from PDFs, emails and e-books |
| Remove all | Every line break becomes a space | One-line text for forms, titles, spreadsheet cells |
| Replace with… | Each line becomes an item joined by your separator | Turning a list into “apples, pears, plums” |
Why PDFs add line breaks
A PDF stores text as lines placed on a page, not as flowing paragraphs. When you copy from it, each line ends with a break, and long words split at the line end keep their hyphen. Emails written in plain text are often wrapped at about 72 characters for the same reason. Pasted into a word processor, the text then wraps twice and looks ragged. Joining the lines restores normal paragraphs that re-flow to any width.
Hyphenated words
When a word is broken at the end of a line and continues in lower case on the next line, the tool removes the hyphen and joins the two parts: “docu-” followed by “ment” becomes “document”. After common prefixes that form real compound words — self, well, non, co, ex, pre, post, anti, multi, semi and similar — the hyphen is kept, so “well-” followed by “known” becomes “well-known”. Invisible soft hyphens that some documents contain are removed too. Switch the option off if you want every hyphen kept exactly as it is.
Separators and special cases
In Replace with… mode, type any separator: a comma and space for a readable list, a semicolon for spreadsheets, a single space, or \n for a new line. Empty lines are skipped so the list has no gaps. Windows (CRLF) and old Mac line endings are handled the same as normal ones. Your text never leaves your browser. To remove extra spaces, tabs and invisible characters as well, use the Whitespace Remover; to remove repeated lines, use Remove Duplicate Lines.
