Document Metadata Viewer
See the hidden properties of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OpenDocument, RTF and PDF files — author, company, dates, comments, tracked changes.
Office documents carry information you don't see on the page: the name of the author and of the last person to edit the file, the company, when it was created and last saved, how long it was edited, the template it was based on, and sometimes comments, tracked changes, hidden text, hidden sheets or speaker notes. Sending a file can reveal all of this — a former employer's name in a CV, a client's name in a reused proposal, or reviewers' comments in a contract.
Open a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file, an OpenDocument file from LibreOffice, an RTF or a PDF, and this viewer lists its properties, its custom properties, and the hidden content worth checking before you share it. Personal details and visible-to-recipient items are highlighted at the top. Copy the details as text for a record. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded.
How to use Document Metadata Viewer
- Choose or drop a document.
- Read the warnings at the top.
- Check the properties, hidden content and custom properties.
- Remove what you don't want to share, using the tips shown.

What is shown
Different formats store different details. The viewer shows everything it finds and leaves out empty fields.
| Format | Properties | Hidden content checked |
|---|---|---|
| Word (.docx) | Author, editor, company, dates, editing time, words | Comments, tracked changes, hidden text, reviewers |
| Excel (.xlsx) | Author, editor, company, dates | Hidden sheets, comments, external links |
| PowerPoint (.pptx) | Author, editor, company, slides | Speaker notes, hidden slides, comments |
| OpenDocument | Author, editor, dates, editing time, statistics | Comments, tracked changes, hidden text |
| Title, author, software, dates, language | XMP copy, annotations, form fields | |
| RTF | Title, author, operator, company, dates | — |
Why it matters
Metadata has exposed real people and companies: documents published by governments and firms have revealed the names of anonymous authors, reused templates have shown competitors' names, and tracked changes left in contracts have revealed negotiating positions. Checking a file takes seconds. Look especially at Author and Last modified by, Company, comments and tracked changes, hidden sheets in spreadsheets, and speaker notes in presentations, which travel with the file even when you only show the slides.
How to remove it
In Word, Excel and PowerPoint, use File, Info, Check for Issues, Inspect Document to remove properties, comments and hidden content, and accept or reject all tracked changes. In LibreOffice, remove personal information under Tools, Options, Security, and delete comments before saving. For PDFs, the PDF Metadata Remover clears the properties and the PDF Metadata Editor lets you change them. Then open the cleaned file here again to confirm.
Limits
Old binary Office files (.doc, .xls, .ppt) are recognised but not read — save them in the newer format first. Content inside the document itself, such as names in the text, images or footers, is not analysed; the viewer focuses on properties and hidden content. Files up to 200 MB can be opened, and every file is checked by its content rather than its name.
Private
Checking a confidential document should not mean uploading it somewhere. This viewer unpacks and reads the file on your device with JSZip and pdf-lib, and nothing is sent anywhere. For audio files, use the Audio Metadata Viewer; for photos, the EXIF Viewer shows camera details and location.
