XML Sitemap Generator
Create a valid XML sitemap from a list of URLs or a CSV: duplicates removed, dates checked, split into files of 50,000 URLs with an index.
An XML sitemap lists the pages of your site so search engines can find them, especially new pages and pages that few other pages link to. This generator turns a list of addresses into a valid sitemap.xml. Paste one URL per line, or a CSV with url, lastmod, changefreq and priority columns, for example an export from your CMS, your shop, a crawler or a spreadsheet.
Every address is checked: incomplete URLs, other sites and duplicates are reported and left out, special characters are escaped, and dates are converted to the W3C format search engines expect. Lists of more than 50,000 URLs are split into several sitemap files with a sitemap index, downloaded together as a ZIP. A web page can't crawl other websites, because browsers block reading them, so you provide the list.
How to use XML Sitemap Generator
- Paste your URLs (one per line) or a CSV with a header row, or open a .txt or .csv file.
- Choose a default lastmod date, changefreq and priority if you want them.
- Read the notes about skipped lines and fix your list if needed.
- Download sitemap.xml (or the ZIP for large sites), upload it to your site and submit it in Search Console.
Features
- From a URL list or a CSV / TSV with url, lastmod, changefreq and priority.
- Validates every URL: full https address, same site, under 2,048 characters.
- Removes duplicates and #fragments.
- Escapes ampersands and other special characters.
- Converts dates such as 14.10.2026 to 2026-10-14.
- Splits at 50,000 URLs or 50 MB with a sitemap index.
- ZIP download for multi-file sitemaps.
- Runs in your browser; your list is not uploaded.
Sitemap limits and tags
The sitemaps protocol is supported by Google, Bing, Yandex and others. A single file may list at most 50,000 URLs and be at most 50 MB uncompressed; bigger sites use several files and a sitemap index that lists them.
| Tag | Meaning | How search engines use it |
|---|---|---|
| loc | The full page address (required) | Used to discover and crawl the page |
| lastmod | When the content last changed | Used by Google and Bing if it is accurate |
| changefreq | How often the page changes | Ignored by Google |
| priority | Importance from 0.0 to 1.0 | Ignored by Google |
Getting a list of your URLs
Most systems can export one. WordPress, Shopify, Wix and Squarespace already create a sitemap automatically, usually at /sitemap.xml or /sitemap_index.xml, so check there first. For other sites, export page addresses from your CMS or database, download the Pages report from Google Search Console, or run a desktop crawler such as Screaming Frog and export the list of pages. Include only pages that return status 200, are the canonical version and are not blocked by robots.txt or noindex.
Using lastmod correctly
Google uses lastmod when it is consistently accurate, so set it to the date the main content of a page last changed, not the date the sitemap was made. Putting today's date on every page each time you generate the file teaches search engines to ignore it. If your CSV has a modified-date column, the generator uses it; otherwise you can leave lastmod out or apply one date to the whole list.
Submitting the sitemap
Upload sitemap.xml, or all files from the ZIP, to the root of your site so it is reachable at an address such as https://example.com/sitemap.xml. Then add a line Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml to your robots.txt and submit the sitemap, or the sitemap index, in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. The ZIP's sitemap-index.xml uses the folder address you enter, so the index points to where you upload the files.
Frequently asked questions
Can this tool crawl my website?
No. Browsers don't allow a page to read other websites, so the generator works from a list of URLs or a CSV you paste or open.
How many URLs can a sitemap have?
50,000 per file and 50 MB uncompressed. Larger lists are split into several files with a sitemap index automatically.
Do I need priority and changefreq?
No. Google ignores both. lastmod is useful only when it reflects real content changes.
Why was a line skipped?
The notes list the reason: not a full URL starting with https://, a different website, a duplicate, or a URL longer than 2,048 characters.
Can I list pages from several domains?
A sitemap should only contain URLs of the site it is on. Keep Only URLs of the first site on, and make one sitemap per site.
Where do I upload the sitemap?
To the root of your site, then add it to robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Is my URL list uploaded?
No. The sitemap is built in your browser and downloaded directly.
