RAR Extractor
Open RAR files (RAR 4 and RAR 5) in your browser without WinRAR: list the files, extract one or all. Works on Mac, phones and Chromebooks.
RAR archives are common for downloads, game mods and file sharing, but Windows Explorer, Macs, phones and Chromebooks can't always open them. The RAR Extractor opens RAR files directly in your browser — both the older RAR 4 format and the current RAR 5 — so you don't need WinRAR or any other program. See every file and folder inside with its size, filter the list, and extract one file or all of them.
The archive is read by libarchive, a widely used open-source archive library with its own RAR reader, compiled to WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded: the RAR file is opened on your device, checked by its content and against zip bombs, and files can only be saved where you choose.
How to use RAR Extractor
- Choose or drop a .rar file.
- Browse the files and folders, or filter by name.
- Enter the password if the archive is protected.
- Download a single file, or Download all as ZIP.
Features
- Opens RAR 4 and RAR 5 archives without WinRAR.
- Lists files and folders with sizes; filter by name.
- Extract one file or everything (as one ZIP).
- Password-protected RAR files where the method is supported.
- Checks content, refuses zip bombs and unsafe paths.
- Runs in your browser with libarchive (WebAssembly): no upload.
Troubleshooting
If the archive can't be read, check that you have the complete file: interrupted downloads leave RAR files that end too early. A message that the password may be wrong appears when the password doesn't match, or when the archive uses an encryption method this browser version doesn't include. Parts named .part1.rar, .part2.rar or .r00, .r01 belong together and must be joined by a desktop program first. And if the file is actually a ZIP or 7z archive with a .rar name, the extractor tells you which tool to use instead.
What is supported
RAR is a closed format, and its creator's own tools remain the most complete. libarchive's independent reader handles the RAR archives people meet most often, and this table shows where its limits lie.
| Archive | Supported |
|---|---|
| RAR 4 and RAR 5, normal compression | Yes |
| Stored (uncompressed) RAR files | Yes |
| RAR with a password on the file contents | Often — depends on the encryption version |
| RAR with encrypted file names (-hp) | No |
| Multi-part archives (.part1.rar, .r00…) | No — use WinRAR or 7-Zip to join them |
| Recovery records and comments | Ignored |
Extracting everything
Browsers save files one by one and can't create folders, so Download all extracts every file and packs them into a single ZIP that keeps the folder structure. Your computer, phone or tablet opens ZIP files without extra software. The ZIP is created without compression, so it's quick to make, and all files keep their original contents exactly. To get just one file, use its own Download button instead — only that file is decompressed.
Passwords and safety
When the archive reports encrypted contents, a password box appears; the password is only used inside your browser. If the password is wrong you get a clear message rather than a broken file. Every file is checked by content, so a ZIP or 7z renamed to .rar is pointed to the right extractor. Archives that would unpack far beyond their own size are refused as possible zip bombs, and paths such as ../../file are cleaned so nothing can escape the destination.
Opening RAR files on different devices
On a Mac, a Chromebook, an iPhone, an iPad or an Android phone, this page works without installing an app. It's also handy on work computers where you can't install software. Archives up to 1 GB can be opened, unpacking to at most 2 GB with up to 20,000 files. For very large or multi-part archives, a desktop program such as 7-Zip (Windows), The Unarchiver or Keka (Mac) is the better choice.
