Slug Generator
Turn titles into clean, SEO-friendly URL slugs: lower case, accents and other alphabets transliterated, stop words removed, any length.
A slug is the readable part of a web address that identifies a page, like how-to-bake-bread in example.com/blog/how-to-bake-bread. The Slug Generator turns any title into a clean slug: lower case, words joined with hyphens, punctuation removed, and accented letters and other alphabets converted to plain Latin letters, so São Paulo becomes sao-paulo and Москва becomes moskva.
You can remove common stop words such as the, of and in, set a maximum length that never cuts a word in half, choose hyphens, underscores or dots, and convert a whole list of titles at once, one per line. A preview shows each slug in your site's address. Everything happens in your browser as you type.
How to use Slug Generator
- Type or paste a title, or many titles one per line.
- Choose the separator and the maximum length.
- Optionally remove stop words or keep letters from scripts such as Hindi or Chinese.
- Copy or download the slugs, and check the preview with your site address.
Features
- Lower case, hyphen-separated slugs by default.
- Accents removed: é → e, ñ → n, ç → c; ß → ss, æ → ae, ø → o.
- Cyrillic (Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian…) and Greek transliterated to Latin.
- German style umlauts (ä → ae) as an option.
- & becomes and, @ becomes at; apostrophes dropped (what's → whats).
- Optional removal of English stop words.
- Maximum length that cuts at a word boundary.
- Bulk mode: one slug per line, with a URL preview.
Examples
These titles are converted with the default settings: hyphen separator, lower case and a 60-character limit.

What makes a good slug
Good slugs are short, readable and describe the page. Google's URL guidelines recommend simple, descriptive words and hyphens rather than underscores to separate them, because hyphens are treated as word separators. Keep the main keyword, drop filler words when the slug gets long, avoid dates if you plan to update the page, and use lower case so the same page can't be reached at two addresses that differ only in capital letters. Three to five words is a good target for most pages.
Accents and other alphabets
Web addresses can technically contain any Unicode letter, but they are shown encoded, so a slug like café appears as caf%C3%A9 when copied into an email or a spreadsheet. Converting to plain Latin letters keeps links tidy and easy to type. The generator removes accents from Latin letters, spells special letters out (ß as ss, æ as ae, ł as l) and transliterates Cyrillic and Greek. For German text you can write ä, ö and ü as ae, oe and ue. Scripts without a simple Latin spelling, such as Hindi, Chinese or Arabic, are dropped unless you turn on Keep other scripts, which keeps those letters in the slug.
Changing the slug of a published page
Once a page is live and indexed, changing its slug changes its address. If you must do it, set up a permanent (301) redirect from the old address to the new one so visitors and search engines are sent to the right place and the page keeps its ranking. Update internal links and your sitemap too. For new pages, settle the slug before you publish.
Frequently asked questions
What is a URL slug?
The part of a web address after the domain that names a specific page, for example best-running-shoes in example.com/blog/best-running-shoes.
Should I use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google reads hyphens as spaces between words, while underscores join words together.
How long should a slug be?
Short enough to read at a glance: usually 3 to 5 words, well under 60 characters. Set a maximum length and the generator cuts at a whole word.
Should I remove stop words like the and of?
Often yes for long titles, because they add length without meaning. Keep them when the slug would read strangely without them.
Can it handle Russian or Greek titles?
Yes. Cyrillic and Greek letters are transliterated to Latin, for example Москва becomes moskva.
Can I convert many titles at once?
Yes. Paste one title per line and you get one slug per line, ready to copy or download.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Slugs are generated in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
