Mute Video

Remove the sound from a video in seconds. The picture is copied without re-encoding, so the quality stays exactly the same. No upload.

Choose a video and the tool removes its sound track, leaving a silent video ready to share or to use with new music or a voice-over. The picture is copied exactly as it is, without re-encoding, so even a long video is done in seconds and the quality does not change at all.

MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos are supported. Phone videos recorded in H.265 (HEVC) can be muted too, because the picture does not need to be decoded. Everything happens in your browser: the video is never uploaded, which also makes it quick for large files.

How to use Mute Video

  1. Choose or drop the video.
  2. Check the details: the tool shows whether the picture can be copied as it is.
  3. Press Remove sound.
  4. Download the silent video.

Features

  • Removes every sound track
  • Picture copied without re-encoding: no quality loss
  • Very fast, even for long videos
  • MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV
  • Works with iPhone H.265 videos
  • Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded

Why remove the sound from a video?

Background noise, wind, private conversations or copyrighted music often make a clip unusable as it is. Muting it lets you post it safely, use it as a silent background on a website or in a presentation, or add your own music or narration in an editor. Social networks may also block or mute videos with copyrighted music, and removing it first avoids that.

Silent videos are also needed for website hero backgrounds: browsers only autoplay videos that are muted, and a file without sound is a little smaller.

How it works

A video file holds separate tracks for the picture and the sound. The tool writes a new file with only the picture track, copying its compressed data unchanged into an MP4 (for H.264 and H.265 video) or WebM (for VP8, VP9 and AV1). Nothing is decoded or re-compressed, which is why it is fast and lossless.

H.265 / HEVC (iPhone High Efficiency)MP4No

Mute only part of a video

This tool removes the sound from the whole video. To silence only a section, cut the video into parts with the Video Cutter, mute the part you want silent, and join them again with the Video Merger. To keep the sound but make it quieter, use the Audio Volume tool on the video's sound.

Privacy

Your video is read and written by your own browser using its built-in video support. It is never sent to a server, so private family videos and work recordings stay on your device. Very large files depend on the memory of your device; on a phone, videos up to a few hundred megabytes work best.

Adding new music or a voice-over

Once the original sound is gone, you can put your own soundtrack under the picture in any video editor, including the free editors that come with Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Choose music that you have the right to use, such as tracks from royalty-free libraries or the music libraries built into social apps, to avoid copyright claims. For a voice-over, record it with the Voice Recorder tool while watching the silent video, then combine the two in the editor. Keeping a muted copy of a clip is also useful when you want to reuse the same footage several times with different music, because each edit then starts from a clean, silent picture rather than from a mix you would have to fade out.

Frequently asked questions

Does muting reduce the video quality?

No. The picture is copied exactly as it is, without re-encoding, for H.264, H.265, VP8, VP9 and AV1 videos.

Which formats are supported?

MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. The result is MP4 or WebM, depending on the video codec.

Can I mute an iPhone video?

Yes. iPhone videos in H.265 (HEVC) can be muted even if your browser cannot play them, because the picture is only copied.

How long does it take?

Usually a few seconds, because nothing has to be re-encoded.

Can I mute just a part of the video?

Not directly. Cut out the part with the Video Cutter, mute it here and join the parts with the Video Merger.

Is the video uploaded?

No. It is processed in your browser and stays on your device.
