ZIP Creator
Create a ZIP file from files and whole folders in your browser, keeping the folder structure, with normal, maximum or no compression.
Pack several files — or a whole folder with its sub-folders — into one ZIP file, ready to email, upload or archive. Add files with the button, drop files or folders onto the page, or use Add a folder to pick a folder; the folder structure is kept inside the ZIP. Remove anything you added by mistake, name the archive, choose the compression and press Create ZIP.
The ZIP is created in your browser with JSZip, a widely used open-source library, so your files are never uploaded — fast for large files and safe for private documents. Files with the same name are renamed automatically instead of overwriting each other, and names are cleaned so the archive opens on Windows, Mac and Linux.
How to use ZIP Creator
- Add files with Add files, drop them, or add a whole folder.
- Check the list and remove anything you don't want.
- Name the ZIP and choose the compression: Normal, Maximum or None.
- Press Create ZIP and download it.
Features
- Any file type; files and whole folders with their structure.
- Drag and drop files or folders.
- Normal, maximum or no compression.
- Duplicate names renamed automatically; unsafe names cleaned.
- Shows the total size and how much smaller the ZIP is.
- Up to 20,000 files and 2 GB; nothing is uploaded.
Common uses
Collect the documents for an application, a tax return or a project hand-over into one file so nothing goes missing. Send a folder of photos or design files to a client in one download. Back up a project folder before making big changes. Upload several files to a form or website that accepts only one. Because the ZIP keeps the folder structure, the person who opens it sees the files organised exactly as you had them, on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android or iPhone.
Which compression to choose
ZIP compresses each file separately with the Deflate method. How much it helps depends on the files: text, documents, spreadsheets and uncompressed images shrink a lot, while photos, videos, MP3s and files that are already compressed hardly change.
| Setting | Speed | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Fast | Almost everything: a good balance of size and speed |
| Maximum (slower) | Slower | Text-heavy files when every kilobyte counts |
| None (fastest) | Fastest | Photos, videos, music and other already-compressed files |
Folders and file names
When you add a folder, every file keeps its path inside it, so the person who opens the ZIP gets the same folder structure. If two files would end up with the same path, the second is renamed to “name (2).ext” rather than replacing the first. Names are cleaned of characters that Windows doesn't allow in file names and of path tricks such as “..”, so the archive opens cleanly everywhere. The ZIP name defaults to the name of the folder you added.
Sending ZIP files
A ZIP keeps many files together and makes sure nothing gets lost or reordered. Email services usually limit attachments to 20 or 25 MB; if your ZIP is larger, use a file-sharing link or split the files into several ZIPs. To make photos or PDFs inside the ZIP smaller first, use the Image Compressor or Compress PDF tools — that saves far more space than ZIP compression for those files.
Private and compatible
Your files are read from your device and packed in the browser; nothing is sent to a server. The ZIP uses the standard format with UTF-8 file names, which Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS all open without extra software. Password protection isn't offered, because the only ZIP encryption a browser library can produce reliably is the old, easily broken kind — for confidential files, use an encrypted archive tool or share them through a secure service.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create a ZIP file?
Add your files or a folder, choose the compression and press Create ZIP.
Can I zip a whole folder?
Yes. Use Add a folder or drop the folder onto the page; its structure is kept.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The ZIP is created in your browser and your files stay on your device.
Why didn't my photos get smaller?
Photos and videos are already compressed, so ZIP can't shrink them much. Use the Image Compressor instead.
Can I password-protect the ZIP?
No. Old ZIP passwords are easy to break, so this tool doesn't offer them.
How many files can I add?
Up to 20,000 files with a total of 2 GB.
How do I open a ZIP file?
Double-click it on most computers, or use the ZIP Extractor in your browser.
