Video Trimmer
Trim a video to a start and end time in your browser — instantly without re-encoding, or frame-exact. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. No upload.
Keep only the part of a video you need: cut the boring start, the shaky end or the minutes before the moment that matters. Open an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV video, play it, and set Start and End by typing a time or pausing the player and pressing Use current position. The Video Trimmer saves the selected part as a new file and leaves your original untouched.
In Fast mode the video and sound are copied without re-encoding, so even a long video is trimmed in seconds and the quality is exactly the same as the original. Exact mode re-encodes the picture so the new file starts precisely on the frame you chose in every player and editor. Everything runs in your browser — the video is never uploaded.
How to use Video Trimmer
- Choose or drop a video.
- Play it and set Start and End — type a time or use the current position.
- Choose Fast (no re-encoding) or Exact (re-encode).
- Press Trim video and download the result.
Features
- Trims MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV videos.
- Fast mode: no re-encoding, no quality loss, done in seconds.
- Exact mode: frame-accurate start in every player and editor.
- Start and End by typing a time or from the player position.
- Keeps the sound in step with the picture.
- WebM stays WebM; other formats are saved as MP4.
- Runs in your browser with WebCodecs: no upload, no watermark.
Fast or exact?
Compressed video stores a full picture (a key frame) only every second or two; the frames in between only describe changes. A file can therefore only start cleanly on a key frame unless the picture is re-encoded.
| Mode | Speed | Quality | Start of the new file |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast (no re-encoding) | Seconds, even for long videos | Identical to the original | At your Start time in players; the moment before it is kept but hidden |
| Exact (re-encode) | Longer — depends on the length and your device | Very close to the original | Exactly at your Start time everywhere |
Choosing the start and end
Type times as seconds (75), minutes and seconds (1:15) or with tenths (1:15.5); longer videos accept hours (1:02:30). Or play the video, pause at the right moment and press Use current position next to Start or End. The selected length is shown below the fields, and the trim button stays disabled until End comes after Start. To remove a part from the middle of a video instead, use the Video Cutter; to join several videos, use the Video Merger.
Formats and sound
The trimmer opens MP4, M4V and MOV (including most phone videos), WebM and MKV files. It checks every file by its content, so a document or a picture renamed to .mp4 is refused with a clear message. The sound is trimmed with the picture and stays in sync. WebM videos are saved as WebM; everything else is saved as MP4, the most widely playable format. iPhone videos recorded in H.265 (HEVC) need a browser that can decode HEVC: Safari, or Edge and Chrome on Windows with Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions installed.
Private and fast
Online trimmers upload your whole video, process it on a server and make you download it again — slow for large files, and your video is out of your hands. Here the file is read in pieces directly from your device and processed by your browser's own media engine (WebCodecs). Nothing is sent anywhere, there is no file size limit apart from your device's memory (files up to 2 GB can be opened), and there is no watermark.
Frequently asked questions
How do I trim a video?
Open the video, set Start and End, choose Fast or Exact and press Trim video. The selected part is saved as a new file.
Does trimming lower the quality?
Not in Fast mode: the video and sound are copied as they are. Exact mode re-encodes the picture at high quality.
Why does my trimmed video start a moment early in my editor?
In Fast mode the file keeps the key frame before your start, which players hide but some editors show. Use Exact mode for a frame-accurate start.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Trimming happens in your browser and the video never leaves your device.
Which formats are supported?
MP4, M4V, MOV, WebM and MKV. The result is MP4, or WebM for WebM videos.
Can I trim videos on my phone?
Yes, in current mobile browsers. Fast mode is quickest on phones.
How do I remove a part from the middle?
Use the Video Cutter, which removes a section and joins the rest.
