Receipt OCR
Scan a receipt photo and get the shop, date, total, tax and items as editable fields — then download CSV or JSON for expenses.
Typing receipts into an expense report or a spreadsheet is tedious. Receipt OCR reads a photo or scan of a receipt and pulls out what you need: the shop's name, the date and time, the total, the subtotal and tax, the currency, and the individual items with their prices. Everything appears in editable fields, so you can correct anything the scan misread, then copy a summary or download the data as CSV — which opens in Excel and Google Sheets — or JSON.
The text is read by Tesseract, an open-source OCR engine, running in your browser, with the receipt's language of your choice. Receipts often contain card numbers, addresses and purchase details, so it matters that nothing is uploaded: the photo never leaves your device.
How to use Receipt OCR
- Choose the language of the receipt.
- Choose or drop a photo of the receipt, taken flat and well lit.
- Check and correct the shop, date, total, tax and items.
- Download CSV or JSON, or copy the summary.
Features
- Shop name, date, time, total, subtotal, tax and currency.
- Line items with quantity and price.
- Understands 12.50, 12,50 and 1,234.56 style amounts.
- Dates in many formats, such as 03/04/2026, 2026-04-03 and Mar 5, 2026.
- Editable fields before export.
- CSV (Excel, Google Sheets) and JSON download.
- OCR in your browser with Tesseract; nothing is uploaded.
Taking a good photo
OCR accuracy depends mostly on the photo. Lay the receipt flat on a dark, plain surface, in even light without shadows or glare, and fill the frame with the receipt. Hold the phone straight above it rather than at an angle. Long receipts can be photographed in two halves and read separately. Thermal receipts fade over time, so scan important ones soon after you get them.
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Faded or light print | Photograph in brighter light, or scan it |
| Crumpled paper | Flatten it under a book first |
| Glare on shiny paper | Turn off the flash and move away from direct light |
| Small text | Move closer so the receipt fills the picture |
| Wrong language | Choose the receipt's language before reading |
How the details are found
After the text is read, the tool looks for patterns. The shop is usually the first line with words; dates and times are recognised in common formats; the total is taken from a line with words like Total, Amount due or To pay, and if none is found, from the largest amount on the receipt. Subtotal and tax lines (VAT, GST, sales tax) are recognised too, and the remaining lines with a price become items, with quantities like 2 x when present. Payment lines such as card, cash and change are not counted as items.
Check before you export
OCR is good but not perfect: a 5 can be read as an S, and faded receipts lose characters. Always compare the total, date and tax with the receipt before submitting an expense claim — that's why every value is an editable field. You can also edit the recognised text in the box below and the details are found again. The CSV includes a summary block and then one row per item.
Common uses
Fill in business expense reports, track household spending in a spreadsheet, keep records of purchases for tax returns or warranties, split bills with friends, or collect the data of many receipts into one sheet by downloading a CSV for each and combining them. For general text from any picture, use Image to Text; for multi-page scanned documents, use PDF OCR.
Private
The photo is read on your device. The reading engine and the chosen language file are downloaded once from this site the first time you use them and then work from your browser's cache. No image, text or amount is sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How do I scan a receipt?
Choose the receipt's language, then a photo of it; the details appear as editable fields.
Can I export receipts to Excel?
Yes. Download the CSV and open it in Excel or Google Sheets.
Which languages are supported?
English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Hindi.
Why is the total wrong?
The photo may be blurred or faded. Correct the field, or take a sharper photo in better light.
Is my receipt uploaded?
No. It is read in your browser.
Can it read handwritten receipts?
Only clear, print-like handwriting; printed receipts work best.
Can I scan several receipts?
One at a time; download a CSV for each.
