Duplicate File Finder
Find identical files in a folder or a set of files by their content (SHA-256), with the space wasted and a CSV report.
Copies of the same photo, download or document pile up over the years and waste disk space. Choose a folder, or any set of files, and this tool finds the ones whose content is exactly the same, whatever their names or dates. It shows each group of identical files with their folder paths, how much space the extra copies take, and gives you a CSV report you can open in Excel.
The comparison happens in your browser: files are grouped by size first, then only files of the same size are read and fingerprinted with SHA-256, so even large folders are quick and nothing is uploaded. A web page cannot delete files on your disk, so the tool only reports; you keep full control over what to remove.
How to use Duplicate File Finder
- Click Add a folder (or Add files), or drop files and folders on the page.
- Wait while files of the same size are compared by their SHA-256 hash.
- Open each group to see the paths of the identical copies and the space wasted.
- Download the CSV report, then delete the copies you don't need in your file manager.
Features
- Compares content, not names or dates
- Whole folders including subfolders
- Size first, then SHA-256 only where needed
- Space wasted per group and in total
- CSV report for Excel or Google Sheets
- Up to 20,000 files; nothing is uploaded
How the comparison works
Two files can only be identical if they have exactly the same size, so the tool first groups files by size, which costs nothing. Files with a size of their own are skipped immediately. For the rest, the tool reads every byte and computes a SHA-256 hash, a 64-character fingerprint that changes completely if even a single bit differs. Files with the same size and the same hash are duplicates. The chance of two different files sharing a SHA-256 hash is so small that it has never happened by accident.
| Files | Same size? | Same SHA-256? | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| holiday.jpg and holiday (1).jpg | yes | yes | duplicates |
| report.pdf and report-final.pdf | yes | no | different (same size by chance) |
| song.mp3 and song.m4a | no | not checked | different |
What counts as a duplicate
Only files with byte-for-byte identical content. The same photo saved again at a different quality, resized, or with edited metadata is a different file, even if it looks the same; finding similar images needs a visual comparison, which this tool does not do. File names, folder locations and dates are ignored, so a renamed copy is still found. Empty files (0 bytes) are all identical to each other and are not counted, because they take no space.
Why the page can't delete files
For your safety, browsers do not let web pages delete or move files on your computer. The tool reports what it found: each group lists its files in alphabetical order, with the first marked as the copy to keep and the rest as duplicates in the CSV report. Before deleting, check which copy is in the right folder, and remember that some programs, such as photo libraries and music apps, keep their own copies on purpose. When in doubt, move duplicates to a separate folder first instead of deleting them.
Privacy and large folders
Nothing is uploaded: the browser reads the files directly from your disk. Reading is the slow part, so a folder with many large videos of identical size takes longer than thousands of small files of different sizes. Up to 20,000 files can be compared in one go; for a whole drive, check one folder at a time. A progress bar shows how far the comparison is.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find duplicate files in a folder?
Click Add a folder and choose it. The tool compares every file inside, including subfolders, and lists the identical ones.
Are my files uploaded?
No. They are read and compared in your browser and never leave your device.
Does it find renamed duplicates?
Yes. Only the content is compared, so names, folders and dates make no difference.
Can it delete the duplicates?
No, browsers don't allow web pages to delete files. Use the list or the CSV report and delete the copies in your file manager.
Does it find similar photos?
No, only exact copies. A resized or re-saved photo has different bytes and is treated as a different file.
How many files can I check?
Up to 20,000 at once. Files of different sizes are skipped without reading, so most folders are quick.
