MP4 to MP3
Convert MP4, MOV and WebM videos to MP3 or M4A audio in your browser: choose the quality, cut a part, convert several files. No upload.
Take the sound out of a video and keep it as an audio file: a song from a music video, a talk or lecture you want to hear on the go, a voice memo recorded with your phone camera, or the soundtrack of a screen recording. The MP4 to MP3 converter reads MP4, MOV and WebM videos as well as M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC and MP3 files, and saves the sound as MP3 at 128, 192 or 320 kbps, or as M4A.
Everything happens in your browser. The video is decoded by your browser's own media engine and the MP3 is made with LAME, the well-known open-source MP3 encoder, running on your device, so your files are never uploaded, there is no queue and no limit on the number of conversions. You can play the video, pick the part you want with Start and End, or drop several files to convert them all at once.
How to use MP4 to MP3
- Choose, drop or paste one or more video or audio files.
- For a single file, play it and set Start and End to keep only a part (optional).
- Choose MP3 and a quality (128, 192 or 320 kbps), or M4A to keep the original sound.
- Press Convert and download your audio file.
Features
- Converts MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV videos, plus M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC and MP3 audio.
- MP3 at 128, 192 or 320 kbps with the LAME encoder.
- M4A output that copies AAC sound without re-encoding, so nothing is lost.
- Cut a part with Start and End, using the built-in player to find the moment.
- Several files at once, each saved with its own name.
- Surround sound (5.1) is mixed down to stereo; mono stays mono.
- Shows the expected file size before you convert.
- Runs in your browser: no upload, no account, no watermark.
Which quality should I choose?
MP3 quality is measured in kilobits per second (kbps): more bits keep more detail and make larger files. Each minute of sound takes about 0.9 MB at 128 kbps, 1.4 MB at 192 kbps and 2.3 MB at 320 kbps. The converter shows the expected size for your file before you start.
| Quality | Size per minute | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 128 kbps | about 0.9 MB | Speech, podcasts, lectures, audiobooks |
| 192 kbps | about 1.4 MB | Music on phones and headphones — the usual choice |
| 320 kbps | about 2.3 MB | The highest MP3 quality, for music you care about |
| M4A (original) | same as in the video | Keeping the exact sound of the video without any loss |
MP3 or M4A?
Most videos from phones, cameras and the web store their sound as AAC. Choosing M4A copies that AAC sound into an audio file exactly as it is: the conversion is very fast and there is no loss of quality at all. M4A plays on iPhones, Android phones, Windows, Macs and in every modern browser and music app.
MP3 is the most widely supported audio format of all, including older car stereos, MP3 players and some editing software, but it means encoding the sound again, which loses a little detail. At 192 or 320 kbps the difference is very hard to hear. If the video's sound is not AAC (WebM videos use Opus, for example), M4A converts it to AAC at 192 kbps.
Cutting a part of the sound
When you open a single file, a player appears with Start and End fields. Play the video, pause at the moment you want, and press Use current position next to Start or End; or type a time as seconds (75) or minutes and seconds (1:15, or 1:15.5 for half a second). The selected length is shown below, and the size estimate follows it. When you drop several files, each one is converted in full.
Privacy, limits and supported browsers
Online converters usually upload your video to a server, which is slow for large files and means a copy of your recording leaves your hands. Here the file is read in pieces directly from your device and processed by your browser's built-in media decoder (WebCodecs), so even long videos start converting immediately and nothing is sent anywhere. Files up to 2 GB can be opened.
The converter works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on computers and phones. Each file is checked by its content, not its name, so a picture renamed to .mp4 is refused with a clear message. Some iPhone videos use H.265 (HEVC); their sound can still be extracted, because only the sound track is decoded.
Frequently asked questions
Is this MP4 to MP3 converter free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files.
Are my videos uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, so your videos and the audio files stay on your device.
What is the best MP3 quality for music?
192 kbps is the usual choice and sounds very close to the original on phones and headphones. Choose 320 kbps for the highest MP3 quality, or M4A to keep the original sound without any loss.
Can I convert only part of a video?
Yes. Open a single file, then set Start and End by typing a time or by pausing the player and pressing Use current position.
Can I convert several videos at once?
Yes. Choose or drop several files together; each one is converted in full and saved with its own name.
Which video formats are supported?
MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV videos, and M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC and MP3 audio files, as long as your browser can decode their sound.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, in current versions of Safari, Chrome and other modern mobile browsers.
Why does my file say it has no sound?
Some videos, such as screen recordings without a microphone or clips with the sound removed, have no audio track. There is nothing to extract from them.
