TAR Extractor
Open TAR, TAR.GZ / TGZ, TAR.BZ2 and TAR.XZ archives in your browser: see every file and extract one or all, without installing anything.
TAR archives are the standard way to bundle files on Linux and macOS servers: source code releases, backups, Docker images, log bundles and datasets usually arrive as .tar.gz or .tgz files. On Windows, phones and Chromebooks they can be awkward to open without installing extra software. The TAR Extractor opens them in your browser.
Drop a .tar, .tar.gz, .tgz, .tar.bz2 or .tar.xz file and you see every file and folder with its size and date. Filter the list, download a single file, or extract everything as one ZIP that any computer can open. Archives are checked by their content, unsafe paths are cleaned, and archives that would unpack to a dangerous size are stopped. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use TAR Extractor
- Choose or drop a .tar, .tar.gz, .tgz, .tar.bz2 or .tar.xz file.
- Browse or filter the list of files and folders.
- Download a single file with its button.
- Or download everything as a ZIP.
Features
- TAR, TAR.GZ / TGZ, TAR.BZ2 and TAR.XZ.
- Lists files and folders with sizes and dates.
- Filter the list by name.
- Download one file or all files as a ZIP.
- Checked by content; unsafe paths cleaned.
- Archive bomb protection.
- Runs in your browser with libarchive (WebAssembly); nothing is uploaded.
Common uses
Open a source code release downloaded from GitHub or a project website, look inside a backup made on a Linux server or a NAS, get the logs a support team sent as a .tar.gz, open a dataset distributed as .tar.xz, unpack theme or plug-in bundles for web hosting, or check the contents of an archive before uploading it to a server. On Windows, macOS, Chromebooks and phones alike, the files appear in seconds without the command line. Archives produced by GNU tar, bsdtar, macOS, Docker and most backup tools are read, including long file names and names in other alphabets. The extracted files keep their names and folder structure when downloaded together as a ZIP, so the layout matches the original archive exactly.
TAR and its compressed versions
A TAR file only bundles files together; it is often compressed afterwards, which adds a second extension. All of these are opened directly — there is no need to decompress first.
| Extension | What it is |
|---|---|
| .tar | Files bundled, not compressed |
| .tar.gz, .tgz | TAR compressed with gzip — the most common |
| .tar.bz2, .tbz2 | TAR compressed with bzip2 — smaller, slower |
| .tar.xz, .txz | TAR compressed with XZ — smallest, used for Linux packages |
Safe to open
Archives can contain paths designed to write outside a folder (such as ../), absolute paths or names with characters Windows can't use; these are cleaned before you see or download them. Archives that claim to unpack to far more than their size — archive bombs — are refused, and extraction stops if the real content turns out bigger than declared. Archives up to 1 GB can be opened, with up to 2 GB of content in total.
A plain .gz file?
A file ending in .gz that is not a TAR archive — for example data.csv.gz or access.log.gz — contains a single compressed file rather than a bundle. Use the GZIP Decompressor for those. To make your own archives, use the TAR Creator for .tar and .tar.gz, or the ZIP Creator for ZIP files, which open on every computer without extra software.
Private
The archive is read by libarchive, a widely used open-source archive library, compiled to WebAssembly and running on your device. Backups, source code and data never leave your computer. For other formats, use the ZIP Extractor, 7Z Extractor or RAR Extractor, or the Archive Viewer, which opens all of them.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to unzip the .gz first?
No. A .tar.gz or .tgz is opened in one step and its files are listed directly.
Can I open a TAR file on my phone?
Yes, in a mobile browser; download the files you need or everything as a ZIP.
How large can the archive be?
Up to 1 GB, with up to 2 GB of files inside.
How do I open a .tar.gz file?
Drop it here; the files are listed and you can download one or all.
How do I open a TGZ file on Windows?
Open it here in your browser — no software needed.
Can I extract everything at once?
Yes. Download all files as a ZIP.
Are .tar.bz2 and .tar.xz supported?
Yes.
Is it safe?
Paths are cleaned and archive bombs are refused.
Is my archive uploaded?
No. It is opened in your browser.
