Repair PDF
Fix PDFs that won't open or show errors: rebuild a broken structure with qpdf, recover objects, or rescue readable pages. No upload.
Choose a PDF that will not open, shows an error such as "the file is damaged and could not be repaired", opens with missing pages, or fails in other PDF tools. The repair tool first checks the file, then tries three methods in turn until one works: qpdf, the open-source PDF toolkit, rebuilds the file's structure; if that fails, every readable object is copied into a fresh PDF; and as a last resort, every page that can still be displayed is saved as an image in a new PDF.
Each result is opened again to make sure it works, and the report explains in plain words what was wrong and what was done. The file is repaired on your device and never uploaded.
How to use Repair PDF
- Choose or drop the damaged PDF.
- Read the quick check of its header, end marker and structure.
- Press Repair PDF.
- Download the repaired file and check it.
Features
- Rebuilds broken or missing cross-reference tables
- Removes junk before the PDF header
- Recovers truncated files, such as interrupted downloads
- Three repair methods tried automatically
- Result verified and explained
- Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded
Why PDFs break
A PDF ends with a cross-reference table, an index giving the position of every object in the file. If a download stops early, a program crashes while saving, an e-mail system adds or strips bytes, or a file is transferred in text mode, that index no longer matches the content and viewers refuse to open the file or show blank pages. Most of the time the content itself is still there, and rebuilding the index brings it back.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What the repair does |
|---|---|---|
| File won't open, "damaged" message | Broken cross-reference table | qpdf rebuilds the table |
| Opens in one viewer but not another | Wrong object offsets | Objects are found and relinked |
| Download was interrupted | File cut off, no %%EOF | Everything before the cut is kept |
| Junk at the start of the file | Added by a server or e-mail system | Bytes before %PDF- are removed |
| Pages blank or garbled | Damaged page data | Readable pages rescued as images |
The three methods
qpdf is used first because it is the most thorough: it reads the whole file, rebuilds the structure and writes a standards-compliant PDF that keeps text, links, fonts and forms. If qpdf cannot make sense of the file, pdf-lib reads it again object by object, ignoring the damaged index, and writes the objects it can read into a new file. If neither works but pdf.js can still display some pages, those pages are rendered at 150 dpi and saved as a new PDF, which preserves how they look but not selectable text; run the OCR PDF tool afterwards to make the text searchable again.
When repair is not possible
If the file is mostly empty, encrypted with an unknown password, or not a PDF at all, for example a Word document or a web page saved with a .pdf name, nothing can bring the content back. The quick check shows whether a PDF header was found at all. Try downloading the file again, asking the sender for a new copy, or looking for an earlier version in your cloud storage or backup.
Privacy
Damaged files are often important ones: contracts, statements and certificates. Here the repair runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly builds of the PDF tools, so the file never leaves your device. Large files take longer on phones; a computer is faster.
Frequently asked questions
How do I fix a PDF that won't open?
Choose it here and press Repair PDF. The tool rebuilds the file structure and gives you a working copy if the content can be recovered.
Will I lose content?
With the first two methods, normally not. If pages had to be rescued as images, their text is no longer selectable.
Can it repair a PDF from an interrupted download?
Usually yes, for the part that was downloaded. Pages that were never downloaded cannot be recovered.
Can it open a password-protected PDF?
No. Use Unlock PDF if you know the password, then repair the unlocked file if it is still damaged.
Why does the repaired file look slightly different?
Damaged parts such as a broken image or font may be replaced or missing. Check the result carefully.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. It is repaired in your browser.
