Regex Generator
Create regular expressions without writing regex: tested patterns for emails, URLs, dates and more, a rule builder, or learn from examples.
Regular expressions are powerful for validating input, searching text and extracting data — but the syntax is hard to remember. The Regex Generator creates them for you in three ways. Pick a common pattern: email address, web address, phone number, dates in three formats, 24-hour time, IPv4 address, UUID, hex colour, US ZIP code, UK postcode, Indian PIN code, numbers, usernames, strong passwords or URL slugs. Or build one from simple rules: starts with, ends with, contains, which characters are allowed and how long it may be. Or paste a few examples and let it learn their shape.
Test the pattern live against your own text, choose case-insensitive or find-all matching, and copy ready-to-use code for JavaScript, Python, PHP or Java.
How to use Regex Generator
- Choose how to create the pattern: Common pattern, Rules or Examples.
- Pick a pattern, set the rules, or type a few example values.
- Choose the options: ignore case, match the whole value, or find all matches.
- Check it in the test box, then copy the regex or the code for your language.
Features
- 17 ready-made patterns, each tested against good and bad examples.
- Rule builder: starts / ends with, contains, allowed characters, length.
- Learns a pattern from example values with the same shape.
- Live test: each line marked as a match or not, or all matches listed.
- Ignore-case, whole-value and find-all options.
- Code for JavaScript, Python, PHP and Java; runs in your browser.
Common patterns and what they accept
The ready-made patterns are practical rather than exhaustive: they accept the values people normally enter and reject typical mistakes. Every pattern is checked automatically against examples like these.
| Pattern | Matches | Doesn't match |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | ann@example.com, j.doe+tag@mail.co.uk | ann@, @example.com, ann@example |
| Date YYYY-MM-DD | 2026-10-15 | 2026-13-01, 2026-1-5 |
| Time 24-hour | 09:30, 23:59 | 24:00, 9:30 |
| IPv4 address | 192.168.1.1 | 256.1.1.1, 01.2.3.4 |
| Hex colour | #fff, #1E293B | #ffff, fff |
| Strong password | Passw0rd! | password, Pass1! |
Building from rules
Rules describe what a valid value looks like without any regex syntax. For an invoice number such as INV-2024-0012: starts with INV-, allowed characters digits and -, length 8 to 14. For a PDF file name: ends with .pdf, allowed characters lower case, digits and -. Length counts the whole value, including the start and end text. “Contains” requires a piece of text anywhere in the value. Characters such as . or ( in your text are escaped automatically, so they match literally.
Learning from examples
Type a few values, one per line. When they have the same shape — the same pieces of digits, letters and separators in the same order — the generator writes a pattern that captures that shape: INV-2024-0012 and INV-2025-0103 become ^INV\-\d{4}\-\d{4}$, which also accepts INV-2026-9999 but not INV-26-9999. When the examples differ in shape, it lists them as alternatives instead. Always check the result in the test box with values that should and shouldn't match.
Using the pattern in code
Match the whole value adds ^ and $, which is what you want for validating a form field; turn it off, or choose Find all matches, to search inside longer text. The code snippets use each language's normal API: test() in JavaScript, re.search or findall in Python, preg_match in PHP and Pattern with find() in Java, with the case-insensitive flag when you choose it. Regex alone can't tell whether an email address exists or a date is real — combine it with proper checks where that matters. To experiment further, use the Regex Tester.
Frequently asked questions
What is a regex?
A regular expression: a short pattern that describes text, used to validate input, search and extract data.
How do I make a regex for an email address?
Choose Common pattern → Email address and copy the pattern or the code for your language.
Can it create a regex from examples?
Yes. Choose Examples and type a few values with the same shape, one per line.
Which languages are supported?
The patterns work in most languages; code is provided for JavaScript, Python, PHP and Java.
Why does my pattern match nothing in a long text?
Match the whole value is on. Switch it off or choose Find all matches to search inside text.
Is the email pattern perfect?
No regex fully covers the email standard; this one accepts normal addresses and rejects common mistakes.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Patterns are built and tested in your browser.
