Barcode Generator
Create Code 128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC, Code 39, ITF-14, Codabar, MSI and Pharmacode barcodes and download them as SVG or PNG.
Barcodes let scanners read a number or code instantly and without typing errors. Shops scan EAN and UPC codes on products; warehouses, couriers and libraries use Code 128, Code 39 and ITF on labels, cartons and books; pharmacies use Pharmacode. This generator creates all of these from your value and checks that the value fits the barcode type you chose.
Choose the type, type the value, and adjust the bar width, height, text size and colours while the barcode updates live. Download it as an SVG, which stays perfectly sharp at any size and is best for print and labels, or as a high-resolution PNG for documents and websites. Barcodes are made in your browser, with no sign-up and no limits.
How to use Barcode Generator
- Choose the barcode type.
- Type the value (a valid example is filled in for each type).
- Adjust the size, text and colours if needed.
- Download the barcode as SVG or PNG.
Features
- 11 barcode types, including Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A and Code 39.
- Checks the value for the chosen type.
- Check digits for EAN and UPC added automatically.
- Bar width, height, text size and colours.
- SVG for print, high-resolution PNG for documents.
- Runs in your browser with JsBarcode; nothing is uploaded.
Common uses
Print asset tags for equipment, make shelf and bin labels for a stock room, add barcodes to event tickets or membership cards, label samples in a lab, create library or file barcodes, or produce product codes for packaging once you have registered numbers. The SVG imports cleanly into Word, Illustrator, InDesign, Canva and label software.
Which barcode type to use
The right type depends on who will scan the code. Retail product codes must follow GS1 rules; internal labels can use whatever your scanners read.
| Type | Holds | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Code 128 | All letters, digits and symbols | Shipping labels, inventory, general use |
| EAN-13 / EAN-8 | 13 or 8 digits | Retail products worldwide |
| UPC-A / UPC-E | 12 or 8 digits | Retail products in North America |
| Code 39 | Capital letters, digits, a few symbols | Industry, ID badges, defence |
| ITF-14 | 14 digits | Cartons and outer cases |
| Codabar | Digits and a few symbols | Libraries, blood banks, couriers |
| Pharmacode | A number | Pharmaceutical packaging |
Retail barcodes need registered numbers
Anyone can draw an EAN or UPC barcode, but for products sold in shops the number itself must come from GS1, the organisation that issues product numbers, through your country's GS1 office. Retailers check that the number belongs to your company. For internal use — stock rooms, events, asset tags — Code 128 is the best choice and needs no registration. To make many EAN-13 codes at once and check their numbers, use the EAN-13 Generator.
Printing barcodes that scan
Print in solid black on white for the best results; dark colours on a light background also work, but red bars and dark backgrounds often do not scan. Keep the quiet zone — the empty margin on each side — free of text and lines. Do not stretch a barcode to fit a space; scale it evenly. For print, use the SVG, which keeps every edge crisp at any size, and follow the size your retailer or printer asks for. Test a printed sample with the scanner or a phone app before printing a large batch.
Private and unlimited
Barcodes are drawn by JsBarcode, an open-source library, directly in your browser. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how many you make, and the values you type are not sent anywhere. For QR codes, which hold web addresses and longer text, use the QR Code Generator.
Frequently asked questions

SVG for printing and labels, because it stays sharp at any size; PNG for documents and websites.
Can I change the barcode colour?
Yes, but dark bars on a light background scan best.

Only with a product number registered through GS1.
