Background Remover
Remove the background from photos automatically with AI that runs in your browser. Brush to fix edges, new background, PNG download.
Cut out the subject of a photo in seconds: people, products, pets, cars or objects. The Background Remover uses U²-Net, a well-known open-source segmentation model, running directly in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded to a server and there are no credits, watermarks or size limits to pay for.
After the automatic cut-out you stay in control: make the edges softer or harder, keep a little more or less around the subject, and use the brush to erase leftover background or restore parts the model missed. Then keep the background transparent, fill it with white or any colour for product listings and ID-style photos, or place the subject on another picture, and download PNG, WebP or JPG.
How to use Background Remover
- Choose, drop or paste a photo.
- Wait a moment while the AI finds the subject (the model downloads once, 4.4 MB).
- Adjust edge softness, and use the Erase or Restore brush on any area that needs fixing.
- Choose transparent, a colour or a picture as background, then download PNG, WebP or JPG.
Features
- Automatic background removal with the U²-Net (U²-Netp) model.
- Runs in your browser: no upload, no account, no watermark.
- Edge softness and keep-more / keep-less controls.
- Erase and Restore brushes with adjustable size and undo.
- Transparent, white, black, any colour or a picture as the new background.
- Before / after view.
- Download as transparent PNG or WebP, or as JPG.
- Photos up to 4096 pixels on the long side.
What works best
The model was trained to find the main object in a picture, so results are best with one clear subject that stands out from the background.
| Photo | Result | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Product on a plain background | Very good | Ideal for marketplace listings with a white background |
| Portrait, upper body | Good | Fine hair may need a softer edge or the brush |
| Pet or car | Good | Check shadows and wheels, restore with the brush |
| Group of people | Mixed | Gaps between people may need erasing |
| Busy scene, subject small or low contrast | Weak | Crop to the subject first with the Image Cropper |
Fixing the cut-out with the brush
Choose Erase and paint over leftover background, such as a patch of floor or a gap between arm and body. Choose Restore and paint over parts of the subject that were removed, such as a thin strap or the tip of an ear. Change the brush size for broad areas or fine detail, and press Undo to take back the last stroke. Moving the softness or keep sliders recalculates the cut-out and clears brush strokes, so set them first and use the brush last.
Privacy and how it works
Online background removers usually upload your photo to their servers. Here, the U²-Netp model (4.4 MB) and the ONNX Runtime engine are downloaded from this site once and run on your own device, so the photo never leaves it. The model looks at a 320 × 320 pixel version of the picture and predicts, for every point, how likely it is to be part of the subject; that mask is then smoothed and scaled up to the full photo. A first run takes a few seconds; later photos are faster because the model stays loaded.
Choosing the format
PNG keeps the transparent background and is accepted everywhere, so it is the right choice for logos, stickers, presentations and design work. WebP keeps transparency in a much smaller file, which is good for websites. JPG cannot store transparency, so the background becomes white or the colour you chose; it is the usual format for marketplace product photos and documents.
Frequently asked questions
Is the background remover free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up, credits or watermark.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The AI model runs in your browser, so your photo stays on your device.
How do I get a white background?
Choose White as the background and download as JPG or PNG. This is a common requirement for product photos on marketplaces.
Why are some parts missing or left behind?
The model can miss thin details or confuse similar colours. Use the Restore and Erase brushes to fix them, or adjust the edge softness.
Does it work for hair?
Reasonably well for portraits. For very fine or flyaway hair, increase the edge softness and touch up with the brush.
Which formats can I download?
PNG and WebP with transparency, or JPG with a solid background.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, in current mobile browsers. Processing takes a little longer than on a computer.
