Image to Text (OCR)
Extract text from photos, screenshots, scans and receipts in 16 languages incl. Hindi, Marathi and Tamil. Copy or save as .txt. No upload.
Turn the words in a picture into text you can copy, edit and search. Choose a photo of a document, a screenshot, a scanned page or a receipt, pick its language, and Image to Text reads it with Tesseract, a well-known open-source OCR engine, running entirely in your browser. Your images are never uploaded.
It reads 16 languages, including English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Gujarati, major European languages, Russian, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese, and up to three of them in the same picture. Select just the part you need, straighten slightly tilted pages automatically, turn sideways photos with one click, and process several images in a row. Small screenshots are enlarged automatically before reading, which noticeably improves accuracy.
How to use Image to Text (OCR)
- Pick the language of the text (up to three).
- Choose, drop or paste one or more images.
- Optionally rotate the picture or select only the part with text.
- Click Read text, then edit, copy or download the result as a .txt file.
Features
- 16 languages: English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Japanese.
- Up to three languages in the same picture, e.g. English + Hindi.
- Read only a selected area of the picture.
- Straightens slightly tilted text automatically; 90° rotation buttons for sideways photos.
- Small screenshots are enlarged automatically for better accuracy.

- Editable result; copy or download as .txt; confidence score.
- Also download as a Word document (.docx) or a searchable PDF of the photos.
- Private: images are read in your browser and never uploaded.
Tips for the best results
OCR works best on sharp, evenly lit pictures where the text is reasonably large. These simple steps make the biggest difference.
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Blurred or dark photo | Retake it in good light, hold the phone steady and parallel to the page |
| Page photographed at an angle | Crop to the page; small tilts are straightened automatically |
| Sideways or upside-down picture | Use Rotate left or Rotate right before reading |
| Text mixed with photos, logos or tables | Turn on Read only part of the picture and select the text |
| Wrong letters or strange symbols | Check that the right language is selected |
| Very small text in a screenshot | Nothing to do: small images are enlarged automatically |
Indian languages
Hindi and Marathi (both written in Devanagari), Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Gujarati each have their own trained model, so choose the language of the text rather than just the script. Documents that mix English and an Indian language, such as forms, bills or certificates, read best with both selected, for example English + Hindi. Printed text works well; handwriting is generally not recognised reliably by Tesseract in any language.
Receipts, screenshots and scans
Receipts are often printed in small, faint letters on curved paper: flatten the receipt, photograph it in good light and select only the lines you need. Screenshots are usually the easiest, because the letters are perfectly sharp; tiny ones are enlarged before reading. For multi-page scanned PDFs, use PDF OCR instead, which adds an invisible, searchable text layer to the PDF itself.
How it works and what to expect
The first time you read text, your browser downloads the Tesseract engine (about 4 MB) and each chosen language (up to 3 MB) from this site and keeps them in its cache. Reading a page then takes a few seconds on a computer and a little longer on a phone. The confidence score is Tesseract's own estimate of how sure it is; below about 60% expect mistakes. Always check important numbers, such as amounts and IDs, against the picture.
Frequently asked questions
Is the image to text converter free and private?
Yes. It is free with no usage limits, and the text is read in your browser; your images are never uploaded.
Can it read Hindi text from an image?
Yes. Choose Hindi, or English + Hindi for documents that mix both. Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Gujarati are also available.
Can I turn photos of documents into a searchable PDF or Word file?
Yes. After reading, choose Searchable PDF to get the photos with invisible, selectable text, or Word (.docx) for editable text.
Can it read handwriting?
Only very neat, print-like handwriting. Tesseract is trained on printed text, so cursive handwriting is usually not recognised.
How do I copy text from a screenshot?
Take the screenshot, press Ctrl+V on this page, click Read text and copy the result.
Can I extract text from several images at once?
Yes. Choose several images; their text is read one after another, each with its own heading.
Why are some words wrong?
Usually the picture is blurred or small, the wrong language is selected, or the text is decorative. Select just the text area and check the language.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to text?
Use PDF OCR for PDFs. It reads every page and can also save the text as a .txt file.
