Random Picker – Spin the Wheel
Spin a wheel of names or options to pick a random winner, pick several at once, or shuffle a list — fair, cryptographically random picks.
Type a list of names, options or prizes, one per line, and spin the wheel: it slows down and stops on a random winner. Need more than one? Pick several winners at once, in random order, or shuffle the whole list. You can also remove each winner automatically, so nobody is picked twice.
Teachers use it to choose who answers next, teams to decide who presents, friends to settle where to eat, and shops and streamers to draw giveaway winners. Every pick is made with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so the result is fair.
How to use Random Picker – Spin the Wheel
- Type or paste the names or options, one per line.
- Press Spin the wheel and watch it stop on the winner.
- Or enter a number and press Pick to choose several at once.
- Turn on Remove the winner to take each winner off the list.
Features
- Colourful spinning wheel with up to 500 entries
- Pick one or several winners at once, in random order
- Shuffle a whole list, for teams, turns or seating
- Optionally remove each winner from the list
- History of earlier results
- Fair: cryptographic randomness, no bias
Is the wheel really random?
Yes. The winner is drawn before the wheel starts turning, using crypto.getRandomValues, the same random number generator browsers use for encryption keys. The draw avoids modulo bias, a subtle flaw where some entries would be very slightly more likely than others; every entry has exactly the same chance.
The spinning animation only shows the result that was already drawn. Each entry gets an equal slice of the wheel, so what you see matches the odds: with 4 entries every name has a 1 in 4 chance, with 10 entries a 1 in 10 chance.
| Entries on the wheel | Chance for each entry |
|---|---|
| 2 | 1 in 2 (50%) |
| 4 | 1 in 4 (25%) |
| 5 | 1 in 5 (20%) |
| 10 | 1 in 10 (10%) |
| 20 | 1 in 20 (5%) |
| 100 | 1 in 100 (1%) |
Ideas for using the picker
In the classroom, put the names of your students on the wheel and turn on Remove the winner so every student gets a turn before anyone is asked twice. For a quiz or a team meeting, Pick with a number such as 3 gives you three people in a random speaking order.
For giveaways, paste the list of entrants and spin once; take a screenshot of the result for transparency. Families use the wheel to decide on chores, games or what to cook, and Shuffle list is handy for random seating plans, presentation orders and tournament draws.
Making teams and groups
To split people into fair teams, press Shuffle list and then count off from the top: the first half is team one and the second half is team two, or take every third name for three teams. Because the shuffle is fully random, every possible split is equally likely.
If some names should appear more often, for example several tickets for one person, simply write the name on several lines; each line is one entry on the wheel.
Privacy
The list stays in your browser. It is not uploaded, not stored on a server and not added to the page address, so names of students, colleagues or customers remain private. Reloading the page brings back the example names.
Frequently asked questions
Is the random picker fair?
Yes. Every entry has exactly the same chance. The winner is drawn with the browser's cryptographic random generator, without the small bias simple methods have.
How many names can I add?
Up to 500 entries. With more than 60, names are no longer printed on the slices, but the picks work the same.
Can I pick more than one winner?
Yes. Enter a number next to Pick and press it to get that many different winners in random order.
How do I stop someone being picked twice?
Turn on Remove the winner from the list after each spin, or use Pick with a number to draw several different winners at once.
Can I give one option a higher chance?
Put it on several lines. Each line is one equal slice of the wheel.
Are my names saved or uploaded?
No. The list stays in your browser and disappears when you close the page.
Does the animation affect the result?
No. The result is drawn first; the wheel is then turned so it stops on that winner.
