CSV Sorter
Sort CSV rows by up to three columns — as text, numbers or dates, ascending or descending — keeping the header on top.
Sorting a CSV file usually means opening it in a spreadsheet, where accents can break, leading zeros disappear and dates get reinterpreted — and then saving it back without damaging anything. The CSV Sorter sorts the file directly and gives you back a clean CSV, with every value exactly as it was.
Open or paste a CSV, then choose up to three columns to sort by: for example by city, then by name, then by date. Each column can be sorted ascending or descending and compared as text, numbers or dates, so 10 comes after 9, $1,250.00 counts as a number, and 15/11/2024 sorts as a date rather than as text. The header row stays on top, empty cells go to the end, and rows with equal values keep their original order. Preview the result, then download it. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use CSV Sorter
- Open or paste a CSV file, or press Sample.
- Choose the column to sort by, its direction and how to compare it.
- Add a second and third column for tie-breaks if you need them.
- Check the preview and download the sorted CSV.
Features
- Sort by up to 3 columns.
- Ascending or descending for each column.
- Compare as automatic, text, numbers or dates.
- Understands thousands separators, currency signs and percentages.
- Dates as ISO, day/month/year or month/day/year.
- Header row kept on top; empty cells last; stable order for ties.
- Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Common uses
Put a mailing list in alphabetical order, rank products by sales or price, order transactions by date before reconciling them, group survey responses by answer, or prepare a file for an import that expects rows in a particular order. Sorting before comparing two exports also makes differences much easier to spot.
How values are compared
Choosing the right comparison avoids the classic sorting mistakes, such as 100 coming before 20 or 1 March coming after 31 January in text order.
| Compare as | Sorts | Example order |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | Numbers as numbers, text naturally | A2, A10, B1 |
| Text A–Z | Alphabetically, ignoring case and accents | apple, Banana, cherry |
| Numbers | By value; $, €, %, commas understood | 9, 10, 1,250 |
| Dates D/M/Y | Day first, plus ISO dates | 15/11/2024, 01/12/2024 |
| Dates M/D/Y | Month first, plus ISO dates | 11/15/2024, 12/01/2024 |
Sorting by several columns
When the first column has equal values, the second column decides their order, and then the third. Sort a customer list by country, then city, then surname; an order export by status, then date descending; or a product list by category, then price. Rows that are equal in every chosen column keep the order they had in the original file — a stable sort — so sorting again by another column never shuffles ties unpredictably.
Your data stays exactly as it was
Unlike a spreadsheet round-trip, sorting here does not change any value: leading zeros, long ID numbers, accents and line breaks inside quoted fields all survive. The separator is detected automatically — comma, semicolon, tab or pipe — and kept in the download. Values that cannot be read as the chosen type, such as n/a in a numbers column, are placed after the real values rather than causing an error, and empty cells always go last, whichever direction you choose.
Private and fast
Customer lists, sales reports and HR exports often contain personal data, so the file is read and sorted on your device and never uploaded. Large files with many thousands of rows sort in a moment. To remove duplicate rows use the CSV Deduplicator, to clean whitespace and empty rows use the CSV Cleaner, and to convert the result to a spreadsheet use CSV to Excel.
