DOCX Editor
Open, edit and save Word .docx documents in your browser — text, headings, lists, links, tables and images. No Word, no upload.
Make quick changes to a Word document when Word is not at hand — on a borrowed computer, a Chromebook, or a machine without an Office licence. Open a .docx file, fix a typo, update a date, add a paragraph or a list item, insert a link, a table or a picture, and save it as a Word document again. You can also start a new document from scratch.
The editor has the essentials: headings, bold, italic, underline and strikethrough, bulleted and numbered lists, quotes, links, tables, images, undo and redo. Unlike online office suites, it needs no account, and your document is never uploaded: it is opened, edited and saved entirely in your browser.
How to use DOCX Editor
- Open a .docx file, or press New document.
- Edit the text and use the toolbar for headings, lists, links, tables and pictures.
- Type a file name.
- Press Save as Word (.docx) to download the edited document.
Features
- Opens Word .docx documents in the browser.
- Headings, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough and quotes.
- Bulleted and numbered lists.
- Insert links, tables and PNG, JPG or GIF pictures.
- Undo and redo, plus the usual keyboard shortcuts.
- Pasted content is cleaned of scripts and styling.
- Saves as a standard .docx; no account and no upload.
What the editor keeps — and what it does not
This is a lightweight editor for content, not a replacement for Word. When a document is opened, its structure is read: text, headings, lists, tables, links and images. Everything you see in the editor is saved. Features that the editor cannot show are not saved, and the editor tells you so when you open a file. For a document with a complex layout, edit a copy, or use the editor only for documents where the content matters more than the look.
| Kept when you save | Not kept |
|---|---|
| Text and paragraphs | Fonts, font sizes and colours |
| Headings, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough | Headers, footers and page numbers |
| Bulleted and numbered lists | Comments and tracked changes |
| Tables | Page size, margins and columns |
| Links | Text boxes, shapes, charts and SmartArt |
| Pictures | Footnotes, table of contents fields |
Good uses
Correct a mistake in a letter or form before sending it. Fill in a simple template — a name, a date, an amount. Update a short policy, a menu, a price list or meeting notes. Draft a new document with headings and lists on any computer and hand it over as .docx. Remove sensitive paragraphs before sharing a document. Because the result is a standard Word file, the recipient can open it in Word, LibreOffice, Pages or Google Docs.
Working with the toolbar
Select text and press B, I, U or S for bold, italic, underline or strikethrough; the usual keyboard shortcuts work too. H1, H2 and H3 turn the current paragraph into a heading, and the paragraph button turns it back into normal text. The list buttons start or end bulleted and numbered lists, and the quote button sets a paragraph apart as a quote. Link asks for a web or email address and links the selected text. Table asks for the number of rows and columns and inserts a table with a header row. Image inserts a PNG, JPG or GIF picture up to 10 MB from your device.
Private by design
Online office suites upload your document to their servers and usually require an account. Here, the file is opened with mammoth and saved with docx, two open-source libraries, entirely on your device. Pasted content is cleaned before it enters the document, so scripts, hidden styling and tracking elements from web pages do not come along. If you try to leave the page with unsaved changes, the browser asks you to confirm. Files are checked by content, and documents up to 100 MB can be opened; old Word 97–2003 .doc files need to be saved as .docx first.
