HTML to DOCX
Convert HTML to an editable Word .docx document with real headings, lists, tables, links and images. Live preview; nothing is uploaded.
Turn HTML into a real, editable Word document. Paste HTML from a CMS, an email template, a web page's source or a generated report — or open an .html file — and download a .docx in which headings use Word's Heading styles, lists are real Word lists, tables are Word tables and links still work. Colleagues can then edit, comment on and track changes in it like any other Word document, which is often far easier than sending them a web page.
A live preview shows what will be converted as you type. You can give the document a title, which Word shows in its file properties. Everything happens in your browser: the HTML is converted on your device and never uploaded, so private reports and drafts stay private.
How to use HTML to DOCX
- Paste HTML into the box, open an .html file, or press Sample to try it.
- Check the live preview.
- Optionally type a document title.
- Press Download Word (.docx) and open the file in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs.
Features
- Headings become Word's Heading styles, so the navigation pane and table of contents work.
- Bulleted and numbered lists, including nested lists.
- Tables with header rows and merged cells.
- Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript, subscript and code.
- Working links, block quotes, code blocks, line and page breaks.
- Embedded images (data URIs) placed in the document.
- Scripts, styles and forms removed; runs in your browser, no upload.
Real Word structure, not a picture of a web page
Some converters wrap HTML inside a Word file in a way that only looks right: Word shows it, but headings are just big bold text, lists are typed bullets, and the document falls apart as soon as someone edits it. This converter builds the document with Word's own building blocks. Heading elements use the matching Heading 1, Heading 2 … styles, so the navigation pane, outline view and automatic table of contents work. Lists are real numbered and bulleted lists that renumber when you add an item, and tables are Word tables you can resize, sort and style with a single click.
What is supported
The converter focuses on content elements, which carry over cleanly. Page design that depends on CSS is not carried over: Word documents have their own styles.
| HTML | In the Word document |
|---|---|
| Headings, paragraphs, line breaks | Heading styles, paragraphs, line breaks |
| Strong, emphasis, underline, strikethrough | Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough |
| Superscript, subscript, inline code | Superscript, subscript, monospace text |
| Ordered and unordered lists, nested | Numbered and bulleted lists, nested |
| Tables with header rows and spans | Word tables with header rows and merged cells |
| Links | Clickable hyperlinks |
| Block quotes and preformatted code | Quote style and monospace blocks |
| Images as data URIs | Pictures in the document |
| CSS layout, colours, web fonts, scripts | Not carried over |
Where the HTML comes from
Typical sources are the HTML view of a CMS or blog editor, an email newsletter you want to archive or hand to a client, documentation pages, generated reports, and pages saved from a browser. You can paste a fragment or a complete page: for a complete page only the content of the body is converted, and its title is used as the document title if you leave the title field empty. Images must be embedded as data URIs; images that point to web addresses are skipped, because the browser cannot fetch them from other websites for privacy and security reasons. To include such a picture, insert it in Word afterwards or use the DOCX Editor.
Private by design
Your HTML is converted on your device with docx, an open-source library, and the file is created directly in the browser. Nothing is sent to a server. Before converting, the HTML is cleaned: scripts, styles, frames, forms and javascript links are removed, and the preview runs in a sandboxed frame that cannot run code or load anything from the internet. That makes it safe to convert HTML from sources you do not fully trust.
Related conversions
If you write in Markdown, Markdown to DOCX goes straight from Markdown to Word. To turn a Word document back into HTML use DOCX to HTML, and to fix something by hand before sending, open the result in the DOCX Editor. For a PDF instead of a Word file, use HTML to PDF.
Frequently asked questions

Paste the HTML or open an .html file, then press Download Word (.docx).
Will headings and lists stay editable?
Yes. Headings use Word's Heading styles and lists are real Word lists.
Are images converted?
Images embedded as data URIs are placed in the document. Images linked from other websites are skipped.
Is my HTML uploaded?

Yes. It is a standard .docx file.
